Collins was a basketball star at UMES for three years. He was a member of the Hawk squad that went to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) in 1973-74 and helped the team win a MEAC Championship in 1974. His performance during those three years was impressive as he was an All-American in 1974 and became a member of the 1,000 point club in 1974. As a sophomore and junior, Collins tallied 1,075 points altogether, while being named to the All-MEAC team twice. He a key part of a UMES scoring attack that led the nation with 96.7 points-per-game in 1974.

Collins was drafted in the second round of the 1974 NBA Draft by the Portland Trailblazers. The Philadelphia, Pa., native was the 38th pick overall in the draft as Portland acquired the pick from Philadelphia. Collins was inducted into the UMES Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 as a member of the 1974 NIT team, before he was honored on his own in 2010.
