Lloyd was inducted into the UMES Hall of Fame in 1977. He played four years of basketball as a forward for the Hawks from 1953-56. The 6'7 big man led UMES (Then called Maryland State) to its first ever Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship in 1956 after he scored 91 points across three games to set a new tournament record.

As a senior, Lloyd averaged 23.2 points-per-game. His 1956 team went undefeated and he was an All-CIAA player for two seasons. Courtesy of his accomplishments, Sonny was named to the 100 Greatest Athletes in CIAA History. He was the No. 18 overall player on the list and had the highest placing of anyone from the state of Maryland. The list of accomplishments does not end there as Lloyd was named to the 25th Anniversary CIAA team in 2012.

While in Princess Anne, he worked to attain a degree in history and government.
